This Rally T-Shirt is based on legendary Kenyan Rally Driver Shekhar Mehta and his Datsun Fairlady 240Z at the Safari Rally in 1973 where he and his codriver Lofty Drews finished in 1st place.
The Car:
The Fairlady Z (S30) was launched in 1969. The Nissan 240Z did well in rallies, coming in 1st overall in the 1971 and 1973 Safari Rally. In the 1971 rally the Datsun 240Z (no.11) finished a five-day, almost 4,000-mile trek across the punishing landscape of East Africa and won the 1971 Safari Rally outright and it has claimed legendary status since then.
The Driver:
In 1981, Shekhar Mehta and Mike Doughty won the inaugural African Rally Championship, the Kenya Safari Rally and scoring the WRC podium with third place at Rallye Cote d'Ivoire.
Shekhar' Mehta (1945-2006) was a Kenyan rally driver, born in Uganda and of Indian origin, and active in rallying between 1966 and 1987, scored several national and regional rally titles and winning five times in the World Rally Championship. He achieved all five WRC wins in the Safari Rally.
